Notes for Elizabeth Ann "Elsie" TIESLER
BIO: Elsie Tiesler was born in Oakleigh in 1890, the first child and daughter of Fritz and Elizabeth Tiesler. Life began on her father's market garden in Oakleigh St, East Oakleigh. Elsie and her siblings attended school at the North Clayton Primary School. After school, one wonders how much Elsie helped with the gardening and harvests. In her early twenties, Elsie was to join her family in it's new home at Allambee Reserve. Before moving, it is thought that she may have been employed in domestic service, as she was remembered for her fine and meticulous table setting's. This trait may also have been the norm in the Tiesler household. After the move, it appears she found a good friend and kindred spirit in Millie Jepson. Photographs and postcards show a close bond. Millie was eventually to be Elsie Tiesler's witness at her wedding, (Annie Amelia Jepson) to John Farrell. Elizabeth Ann Tiesler married John Farrell on the 29th of July 1916. Elsie and Jack were to purchase a farm at the southern end of Clancy's Road Korumburra South. After raising a family of two daughters and one son, Elsie was to be plagued by ill health caused by her thyroid. Despite surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and current medication, Elsie's health was to continue to decline and early dementia was to set in before her early death aged only 58 years. A feature of Elsie Tiesler was her love of her long hair. Apparent in early photographs, her children recall her unwillingness to have her hair shortened even later in life.
